TELEFÓNICA FEND OFF CHALLENGERS IN TIGHTEST OF RACES
Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) leads from PUMA’s Mar Mostro (Ken Read/USA), CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/AUS) and Groupama 4 (Franck Cammas/FRA) in a fight that will last at least 25 nautical miles to Statue Point situated on the northern tip of Pulau We, the island the fleet must leave to starboard before entering the Malacca Strait. TELEFÓNICA PREYS ON CAMPER IN RACE TO MALACCA STRAIT
Telefonica bläst zum Angriff!
In contrast to the port tack beat for the first four days of this leg, the last 24 hours have been nothing short of dramatic. This afternoon at 1600 UTC, Team Telefónica with Iker Martínez was screaming through the fleet, sailing up to two knots faster than the rest and picking off places without remorse. Her final victim was Chris Nicholson’s CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand who, tonight at 1900, also fell prey to Telefónica who are now back at the top of the leg leaderboard as well as leading the race overall. CAMPER COME OFF BEST IN OVERNIGHT FRENZY
TRIMMING, STACKING AND STUDYING
At 1000 UTC today, PUMA’S Mar Mostro (Ken Read/USA) continued her spell at the top of the leg leaderboard from the hard-pushing team on CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/AUS) who are three nautical miles (nm) behind, to lead the six-boat Volvo Ocean Race fleet towards Pulau We, the waypoint that marks the entrance to the Malacca Strait. POINTING AT THE TARGET
It’s neck and neck for the leading pair racing in Stage 2 of Volvo Ocean Race Leg 3 to Sanya. PUMA’s Mar Mostro with Ken Read (USA) has CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/NZL), nipping at her heels like a tiresome terrier, 3.4 nautical miles (nm) astern and to windward. Nicholson is fully fired up to snatch whatever opportunities he can to take the red boat into the lead. Nip and tuck, a game of chess, it’s as close as it can be for these two teams. SANDERSON MAKES NORTHERLY MOVE IN PORT TACK DRAG RACE
For the next 1,000 nautical miles, the Volvo Open 70 fleet will be on port tack in a drag race that is taking the fleet across the southern tip of Sri Lanka and into the Bay of Bengal towards the waypoint at Pulau We and the entrance of the Malacca Strait, nine miles off the northernmost tip of Sumatra. BOAT SPEED IS KEY IN FIGHT TOWARDS MALACCA STRAIT
It’s been upwind all the way since the start of Leg 3, Stage 2 from the Maldives on Sunday, although this is set to change in a day or two once the tightly-packed fleet is free of the wind shadow caused by Sri Lanka, 200 nm to their north. Rome Kirby and Casey Smith keep their eyes peeled on the horizon for wind and wave information of value to Jono Swain, driving behind them. PUMA’S MAR MOSTRO LEADS WAY TO SANYA
PUMA’s Mar Mostro (Kenny Read/USA) is the new leader tonight at 1900 UTC, having forced early leader CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/AUS) into second place. However, the entire fleet is split only by 2.90 nautical miles and CAMPER is only 0.10 nm behind Mar Mostro.Picture Jono Swain drives "Mar Mostro" upwind into night number one.
